Cells and "E" Lab

In class on Thursday May 26 we labeled Animal and Plant Cells. We also started and finished a small lab called the “E” Lab. I will explain what we did in that lab later on in my scribe post.



Parts of an Animal Cell:



Cell Membrane - The outside boundary of a cell


Cytoplasm -
Liquid inside a cell


Golgi Body - A structure in a cell that receives proteins and other newly formed materials from the endoplasmic reticulum.


Lysosome -
A small round cell structure containing chemicals that break down large food particles into smaller ones.


Mitochondria -
Rod-shaped cell structure that converts food into energy.


Nucleus -
A cell structure that contains nucleic acids.


Ribosome -
A small grain like structure in the cytoplasm of a cell where proteins are made.


Endoplasmic Reticulum -
Carries material from one part of the cell to another.



Vacuole -
Stores food, water, waste, and other materials.

The thin layer of protein and fat that surrounds the cell, but is inside the cell wall.



Cell Wall -
A thick layer that surrounds a plant cell.



Chloroplast -
Captures sunlight to produce food for the cell

“E” Lab
:


So now a little about the “E” Lab. When we did the “E” lab we had to cut out any type of “E or e” letter from a magazine that was the size of this font, and paste it on a slide that had a drop of water on it. Then we put a cover slip over it and pasted it on the microscope. The people that had chosen color full letter “e” had seen many color full dots mostly colors like blue, green, yellow, and light purple mixed with dark purple. But the people that chose letters that were black saw a black letter with little lines around it. After we were done looking at the letters we had a sheet to fill in of what we saw and we also had to draw a little pic of how the letter looked like.

Emilija's Reflection Post




I think I improved in my blogging over the past year. I think I mostly improved in my style of writing and the formatting. I think that blogging is helpful for class because the person that is the blogger for a specific class summaries the whole class in a few paragraphs and helps the people that weren’t there to see what we did and also it is helpful to the people that didn’t understand something in class to have a
chance to read what we did.I think blogger could be used also for many other things like for what we did in any other subject like German or French, like Croatian or any other subject. Blogger helped me with me learn how to summaries a one and half-hour of class in a few paragraphs without having to use difficult language. Blogger didn’t really help me with commenting, but it helped me correct a few errors. The most important thing I learned from blogging is that you should do your work on Microsoft word and then past it on blogger!

Reflection Post


During my blogging I learned a lot of good things I did and a lot of bad things I did.

I think I need to improve my:


* Color/ Font
* Spelling
* Grammar
* More pictures
* More information
* Link to a video...


I think that using class blog was a lot of fun and it was useful if someone was absent! Sometimes blogging was a bit to much work if we had other homework, but anyway it was very fun :D

Science Day/ Science Class 10 of February

Today we had Science Day/Normal Science Class!

We had a lot of fun showing little kids the experiments we did over the year and I think that they also enjoyed it. We had 1st Grade come in and then the 2nd Grade as well as 3rd Grade! The presentation was divided in four stations; Newton's Laws, Balloon Rocket Challenge, Friction Lab, and Class Blog!


Newton's Laws Station. The image shows Newton's First Law Inertia.














Balloon Rocket Challenge Station. The image shows how the Balloon Rocket can teach us about the Three Laws of Newton and why these laws are important to know in order to build a rocket.















Friction Station. The image shows how objects create friction when rubbing against each other.

















The Blog Station. This image shows a presenter at the blog station after a hard day's work, teaching about the importance of blogging!








The presentations and stations were taking place in rooms 303 and 302 (Mr.Lewis and Mrs.Lewis). The times of the presentations were at 9-10am and 17:00-18:30pm. The morning presentations were for 1st Grade, 2nd Grade, and 3rd Grade, while the afternoon ones were for the whole school including parents!



The students were divided into four groups that presented every challenge. The morning presentations had an extra presentation on our famous CLASS BLOG! The afternoon groups look like this:

1. Ghazaleh-Tamara-Davide
2. Jakub-Ben-Valentina
3. Karin-Nathan-Emilija
4. Courtney-Chiara-David

We all had a lot of fun! At least I did! We all had a chance to look at the 8th and 6th Grade Science Experiments and Projects!

In Class we talked a little about science day and then we looked over our vocabulary!

Momentum: The product of an objects mass and velocity.

Law of Conservation: The rule that in the absence of outside force the total momentum of objects that interact does not change.

Momentum= mass x velocity

Momentum= p
Mass= m
Velocity= v

Reflection Post

We all had a chance to write and make corrections on our blog posts as well as comment on others. As I read through the comments on my blog I understood that I had to improve my blog posting by 3rd Quarter.


Here are some of my errors:

  • Should use captions for pictures
  • More scientific data
  • Formula for finding average speed (an example)
  • Under labels write "Scribe Post"
  • Write the Title and use Subtitles
  • More colored font
  • A formula for speed

Here are some good things:
  • I had pictures
  • Good spelling and grammar
  • Links to different sites
  • Hyperlink the sites

For the 3rd quarter I will definitely improve my blog posts by including the above mentioned suggestions and trying to make them clearer to read and more fun.

I like blogging because when you are absent, or you forget your notebook you can see what homework there is to do, or what you missed that day. I would like to do blogging again, because it was lots of fun commenting on other people’s blog posts and also reading the comments that they posted for you. The thing that I don’t like about blogging is that when were you write a comment it some times deletes it and it does not do spell check while on Word it does.

Thursdays Class




Today during our normal science block we started a new project, which was a lab, called "How Long Does It Take a Bean Bag to Drop?" The purpose of this lab was to see how the distance an object is dropped affects the time it takes the object to fall.

We dropped bean bags from different heights:




  • the seat of a chair in the science lab




  • the lab table




  • top of the doorway




  • two different heights of stairs.

We dropped the bag three times from each height. That was the fun part!
After we had finished dropping the bags and finding out the time, we had to graph the data we got and the find the average speed. To find the speed you divide the distance by the time. By this time class had already ended, so we finished the rest in the next class. I think that everyone agrees that this was one of the more interesting labs we have done so far. This class was a long class, but there isn't much to
say because we only worked on our lab.



Useful definitions for distance, average speed and speed:

Distance:
The extent of space between two objects or places.

Average Speed: The overall rate of speed at which an object moves; calculated by dividing the total distance an object travels by the total time.

Speed: The distance an object travels per unit of time.
