Balloon Rocket Challenge and Newton's 1st, 2nd & 3rd Laws of Motion

Hello to everyone!

Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th were busy classes for us!
Thursday began with Ms.D checking our homework which was to take notes about Newton's 2nd and 3rd Laws. When she was done checking she put on the board a word document with all the notes that should have been taken, and we all went over them, adding what we didn't have because we will later take a test, and we should know these things. In case you didn't know or weren't there, here are the notes;

Newton's First Law of Motion-
  • An object at rest will remain at rest and an object in motion at a constant velocity (speed + direction) will stay in motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
  • It tells us that force is needed for acceleration.
  • It is friction that causes moving objects to stop, not the removal of force.
  • Examples:
  • - When you are in a moving car and it stops suddenly you fall backwards.
  • - When you are in a moving car and you go around a sharp turn quickly, you bump into the side of the car.
  • Newton's First law of Motion is mostly Inertia.
Ms. D also said to be sure to have the definition of Inertia written down.

Inertia-
  • Inertia- The tendency for objects at rest to stay at rest.
  • The more mass an object has, the more inertia it has, and the more force required to move it is needed.

Newton's second Law of Motion-
  • The main concept is- Mass * Acceleration. (F= ma)
  • Explains how force and acceleration are related.
  • More force = more acceleration for any given object.
  • If you push something harder, it will go faster. ( example- if you push a grocery cart harder, it will move faster.)
  • The objects with more mass (or more inertia) require more force applied to move them. (example- a cart with more groceries will require more force).
  • The unit used for force is Newton
  • - 1N= 1 kg (mass) * 1 m/s/s (acceleration)
  • - 1N is how much force is needed to accelerate 1kg at a rate of 1 m/s/s.
Ms.D suggests you write the examples down or remember them. She also wrote that you need to be able to use the formula F=ma to perform calculations and explain everyday situations. She then WARNED that the next challenge is going to need and use MASS.

Newton's Third law of Motion
  • For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
  • In other words forces come in pairs (push-pull)
  • All objects exert forces (even if it doesn't seem like it)
  • Example;
  • - When you are standing on the floor, you exert a force back on you (remember, only balanced forces result in no movement).

When we were done taking notes, Ms. D made us find 4 groups, with every group having 3 people in it, for our lab.
When that was done and Ms.D agreed, these where the groups that came out;
  • Jakub, Ghazaleh, and Maria Chiara.
  • Davide, Courtney, and Karin.
  • Nathan, Ben, and David.
  • Tamara, Valentina, and Emilija.
Ms.D then went further into explaining that out lab, or challenge, is that we have to make a Rocket Balloon with the following things;
  • 2 straws,
  • a piece of string,
  • 2 Big Balloons,
  • Tape.
This is a model of what can be made out of these objects.

She then told us that if we wanted to add any other objects to the testing we first had to ask her.
We will have a race on February 10th, were we will test our balloons depending on the race we choose our Balloons to run for.
These were the choices;
  • The Balloon that went the furthest.
  • The Balloon that went the fastest.
  • The Balloon that went Up and back down, turned.
She then gave us black balloons to work and begin testing our labs. Unfortunately the black balloons didn't work well, but we still began.
On Friday we continued with the testing, but Ms.D brought bigger Balloons that stretched farther. She then gave a suggestion which was to measure the Balloon's circumference once it reached the right form that you wanted, and make all of them the same to make the science more correct.

She also began telling us some CVs and UVs, which are the following;

CVs-
  • The length of the string for the fastest and farthest, (which is 15m) and the length of the string for the changing direction (4m)
  • Only 2 Balloons are used.
  • Only 2 straws are used.
  • The Balloons have the same diameter each time.
  • The same person from the group measures distance.
  • The same person from the group uses stop watch and times the speed.
  • The same person from the group lets the balloon go.
  • The same straws and balloons are used during the testing unless something occurs to prevent that.
UVs-
  • If the balloon stretches.
  • If the straw bends.
  • If the string bends or the knot loosens.
These aren't the only ones, but they are the only ones we discussed in class. That was it for the two days, and no homework was given except to think of what the balloon's shape could be, and what we could change or add to the rockets to improve them!

Hope you enjoyed reading my blog and the next scriber is....DRUM ROLL......GHAZALEH!

Karin and davide attaching the balloon to the
straws.

Tamara moving the string to the opposite
side when the testing was finished.

Davide and karin preparing for the testing, Karin blowing the ballooon up and davide taking out the string.

  1. Hello Everyone,
    sorry if the color never changes, but somehow, when I wrote it, it put it with different colors, but when I published it, only green showed up!

  2. Hey Vale,
    Your post has definitely improved when comparing it to the one from last quarter! The colors did show up different, but all the green was a bit monotonous. You also had an extra letter in the title which should be fixed as soon as possible. I liked how you used a lot of information on Newton's laws and made it scientific. It was also cool how you put pictures from the experiment but the captions weren't so necessary. I'm not sure why you capitalized a few of the words, and at the end of the first paragraph you randomly changed the font. Your labels looked good as well so overall, this was a good post, much better than your first.

  3. A quick note - the colors have been updated and changed. Please do NOT comment on the colors and issues we are having with them. Thanks for your understanding! ~Ms. D.

  4. Wow Vale!That was a great post! Very detailedpost had pictures and like Ben said very improved post! Though your post took me very long to read, and next time please make it alittle bit shorter! Your grammar looks fine to me. You wrote in the groups in which we are in, I like that! It is also very good that you mentioned Newton's First, second and third Law! "Thank you" for putting the picture of me!!! It was very "nice of you"! :)
    Still, a very good job

  5. Hi Valentina!
    This is a MUCH better post than last time. You had good pictures, a lot of science involved, and you posted it to the right blog, unlike last time! :) I liked your colors, you used good spelling and grammar, it was good that you had definitions of the different words, and it was good that you had the formulas explained. Some things you could improve are explaining what CVs and UVs are, because a lot of people don't understand what they are. You could have added some link, as well, at least to Moodle and maybe to a YouTube video. You could have said what date and month this post is for, not just "the 27th and 28th. Other than that, your labels are really good and overall this is much better than last quarter! Keep it up! :)

  6. Hi there Vale,
    WOW! GREAT POST! I really enjoyed reading your post, and you included everything we did in class. You had great vocabulary, and awesome spelling and grammar. Your font was clear and legible. You had many nice pictures that explained what was going on and what/how the people where testing. You remembered to put the labels, and you put in the correct ones. I really liked that you put in all of the notes we took on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd laws of motion. Thanks to that, anyone that either missed the classed or forgot to write down some of them could see what was going on and copy them down. As Viktor said, you could have included a link or two, and at least one to Moodle. Your science is great, and I think that the cvs and uvs you mentioned were very accurate. Though, as Viktor said, you could have explained the, a bit better for anyone that didn't attend the class. You were very thorough and professional. You put the materials we used for the lab, and that was great. You could have added a link to the sheet with the lab on it, so that the people that weren't in class could see it. This post is definetely better than your last one. Great job!

  7. Valentina - This is a great improvement from your first post last quarter. The pictures you have added are helpful and you covered the notes section of the class thoroughly! Keep in mind when you write someone's name that you need to capitalize the first letter. Also you have no links in this entire post. You must at least link to Moodle and then bring in some new and interesting links that are helpful to the reader. Your spelling overall looks great (except names) and your grammar is fine, plus the post is easy to read. I also do think you could have explained some of the basic physics words we have been covering, just so the reader is more confident when reading your very detailed notes. Good work with the labels for this post. One last thing, please put the dates of the classes in your title - I will discuss this with the class. Overall, excellent improvement from last quarter! ~ Ms. D.

  8. Hey Vale,

    This is a very nice post! You said everything we did in class which is awesome and you didnt forget to label! You added pictures, colors, and used a readable font which is very nice. Your spelling and grammar are good. Valentina you didnt link to anything you could have liked to Moodle.

    Over all you did a very nice job :)

  9. Vale, this was a helpful and great post. Your font was clear, and I could read trough the color. Liked the explanation of Newton's first, second and third law. Up the picture of Tamara you said that she was moving the string when she was moving the straw. You forgetter about the links. I can see a lot of improvements from last quoter!! You included UV's and CV's which it was fine. You include a lot of ”Ms.D. said” that it was good to other people who were missing.
    Good job!!!! I thing this post was made just for people who were missing.!!!:)

  10. Hey Vale, I love this post. I love that it has so many pictures and that you explained what Newtons laws were. I love all the CV's and UV's but there could have been more UV's. The thing that I didn't like was that you didn't put a single link, even to moodle. I love which pictures you put and thier captions. I like how you explained the lab and told us what we were doing. The materials list and the picture of the rocket was a awsome touch, though most of the pictures you put were of me and Davide I loved your post. Overall great first quarter post!

  11. Hey Vale!
    Nice first post of the semester!
    I liked how you put the notes you took in class, and since I wasn't there I can see what all you did in class. I also like the fact that you put pictures! I like that you put the CV's and UV's but next time you should put more UV's! You didn't use a link, and it would've been helpful for someone that didn't know how to get to moodle (and see their homework) to put a link to moodle. That is the only thing that I would change in your post!
    Overall,
    Great post!

  12. Hy Valentina!
    I liked your post. I liked that you took pictures in class which helped visualize the whole thing. For me the notes were a little too long put they are helpful for people who were not there. I think this is a great first post.

  13. Vale,
    Reading your post put a smile on my face, because it is completely different from your first one, with better explanations, titles and subtitles, pictures you put in, and you described everything in class very well. This helped me with my lab and homework very much, but there are small mistakes and incorrect information in the example of Newton's First Law, where you described that when a car comes to a stop it will pull you backwards which is incorrect, instead you will continue going forwards. That's why you use seat-belts to protect you from moving forward. But all the other work is excellent, only the two described days should be separated into different parts. Another thing you could fix is add more hyperlinks. Overall, it is a great job. Keep it going that way!
